Happy New Year to you all and your dogs! As winter progresses and our climate seems to jump from winter to spring every other day we thought we’d share a few tips on looking after your pooches during the cold snaps.
It should go without saying but please don’t leave your dog outside when the temperature drops
When on walks in snow and ice keep an eye on your dog’s fur – as it starts to get wet your dog will lose a lot of heat
Don’t let your pooch walk on gritted/salted roads – it’ll burn their paw pads and if they lick it they can become very ill
Our small dogs get really excited in the snow and it’s essential to have plenty of fresh drinking water to stop them from getting dehydrated
Consider doggy coats but remember that a wet coat will make your dog cold very quickly
If your dogs are anything like ours they will merrily pull you down or trip you over on an icy street (they have 4-paw drive and snow tyres/claws fitted as standard and get really excited to keep on the move). Look after yourself too – make sure you have appropriate clothing and a fully charged phone so you can call for help if the need arises!
Having said all this, winter can be a fun time for you and your dogs, so get out there and enjoy it!
